Not all water is the same and will vary in the amount of total dissolved solids (TDS) it contains. The total dissolved solids is a measure of the combined content of all inorganic and organics substances found in the water, and even subtle differences in this measurement can drastically change the characteristics of a prepared coffee.
Magnesium, calcium and bicarbonate for instance, are three common compounds which can have a strong impact on the flavour of your coffee, depending on how much of them is present in the water used to brew the drink.
Total dissolved solids are measured by how many parts per million (PPM) there are of them in the water and our FilterLogic Water Hardness Test Strips have a detection range of 0, 50, 100, 200 and 400ppm.
The Speciality Coffee Association have released standards they say make for a superior quality of extraction and their guidelines advise water for coffee extraction should be clean, fresh and odour free and have a total hardness of between 50–175 ppm CaCO.
